Chapter 4 IMPACTS ON COASTAL WETLANDS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES

چکیده
uncertainties inherent in making future projections, the major factors controlling wetland sea level responses can be modeled. This chapter considers possible coastal wetland responses to future sea level rise in the conterminous United States, in order to provide information needed to understand future threats to coastal resources during an anticipated period of unprecedented climatic change. Our primary objectives have been to interpret our present understanding of wetland adjustments to sea level rise in terms of a future acceleration of present sea level rise rates, and to outline a method for projecting future regional-level responses that could result from global warming. The research focuses on relatively large-scale spatial patterns as opposed to specific site responses. Therefore, local features often are subsumed within more widespread characteristics

ALTERNATIVES FOR PROTECTING COASTAL WETLANDS FROM THE RISING SEA by Office of Wetland Protection U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Editor's Note: After reviewing the preceding chapters, EPA's Office of Wetland Protection prepared this concluding chapter, which presents their recommendations for protecting coastal wetlands. Recognizing the numerous benefits and values accrued to society from wetlands, there are several options available for minimizing potential future losses of wetlands from predicted sea level rise. These ...
متن کاملCoastal Wetlands and Global Change: Overview
The potential impacts of climate change are of great practical concern to those interested in coastal wetland resources. Among the areas of greatest risk in the United States are low-lying coastal habitats with easily eroded substrates which occur along the northern Gulf of Mexico and southeast Atlantic coasts. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the World Meteorological Or...
متن کاملProtect coastal wetlands in China to save endangered migratory birds.
Evaluating the significance of protected areas for biodiversity and ecosystem services is important for nature conservation. In a recent issue of PNAS, Xu et al. (1) present valuable information on provision of biodiversity and ecosystem services by China’s nature reserves. They conclude that reserves serve bird populations moderately well. However, the importance of coastal wetlands for migrat...
متن کاملInteraction of flooding and salinity stress on baldcypress (Taxodium distichum).
Coastal wetlands of the southeastern United States are threatened by increases in flooding and salinity as a result of both natural processes and man-induced hydrologic alterations. Furthermore, global climate change scenarios suggest that, as a consequence of rising sea levels, much larger areas of coastal wetlands may be affected by flooding and salinity in the next 50 to 100 years. In this p...
متن کاملGenetic Differentiation, Structure, and a Transition Zone among Populations of the Pitcher Plant Moth Exyra semicrocea: Implications for Conservation
Pitcher plant bogs, or carnivorous plant wetlands, have experienced extensive habitat loss and fragmentation throughout the southeastern United States Coastal Plain, resulting in an estimated reduction to <3% of their former range. This situation has lead to increased management attention of these habitats and their carnivorous plant species. However, conservation priorities focus primarily on ...
